Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Zelienople

April 13, 2016

The weather is finally warming up and soon you might have to turn over to your air conditioner. Along with arranging your annual air conditioner service with the experts at Knoechel Heating Company, there are a few other tasks you can do to keep comfortable and save money throughout the year.

During the in-between season in Zelienople, those far too few spring days, you probably use ceiling fans to keep comfy. Did you know that operating your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner might not only keep you more cozy during the warmer days, but also save you money? In order to do that you have to be sure you’re taking advantage of ceiling fans and your air conditioning as you should be. Here’s a few things to note:

Raise Your Thermostat

This is where the cost savings can possibly come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving any money. Raising your thermostat by a couple degrees, in addition to using your ceiling fan, shouldn’t affect your comfort level that much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lessening the length of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.

Adjust Air Direction

Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to change depending on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to ensure the air is blowing down. You can stand below the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, change the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually cool your air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than what the thermostat says.

Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There

Treat your ceiling fan like you do lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to take in the wind chill that a fan provides you’re wasting energy by operating your fan. Remember, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
