How a Solar Energy System Works. The sun is already giving off huge amounts of energy. Why not put it to work in your own home? With the Lennox® SunSource® Energy System we have available at Knoechel Heating Company in Zelienople, you can decrease your dependence on oil and gas and lower your utility bills. But how does it change from sunlight to energy? The most basic way to explain a solar energy system is that the system uses solar modules made of photovoltaic (PV) cells to gather energy from the sun and convert it to electricity. This electricity powers light, appliances and electrical devices in your home. Grid-tied PV systems Grid-tied PV systems are the most common and least expensive for residential solar systems. The SunSource Energy System we carry is grid-tied, which means it’s connected to your utility company’s power grid or power stations. Grid-tied lets you use your solar energy system to power your home. On occasions when the system isn’t producing electricity, the utility grid will supply power to your home. And, when your system produces enough to power your home and then some, it will be fed back into the grid through the process of net-metering. With net-metering, your meter spins forward if you’re using electricity from the grid and backward when you’re SunSource System’s electricity is going back into the grid. *Note: Most rebates and incentives that make a solar energy system less costly are only available when your system is grid-tied. Stand-alone PV systems are another option for those in remote areas without utility service, but they cost a lot more. A stand-alone system is not tied to a utility grid and provide for a home’s entire energy consumption. Ready to go solar?
